Bear hunting out of ambush with carrion.

Bear hunting out of ambush with carrion

In spring, in summer and in autumn in those places where the bears kill home cattle they are hunted out of ambush with carrion. Having killed the cow on an open place the animal often drags the cow off to a thicket - to fir-grove, to low place being overgrown with alder thickets. Labaz is arranged no further than 15 - 20 m from tattered carcass. It must be done with great caution because the sated bear does not go so far, he can lie down somewhere beside. The poles are cut down farther on the place of hunting. You should work as silently as possible. Labaz is arranged so that the lying carrion must be well visible, unnecessary twigs are cut down and carried away. The hunting must take place only in those evenings and at nights when the wind pulls from the carcass to the side of hunter. Before coming to the killed animal the bear goes round the place of feast to make sure of safety. The smell of carrion prevents him to nose out the shot, lying in ambush. The bear comes to gorge at night, very seldom in the twilight that is why the shooting is difficult. A good lantern is a great help in this hunting. It is switched on at the moment of shot. The electricial lantern or a lamp are attached to trunks of a gun. It is better to make it beforehand so that the axis of an aiming has got in the centre of the lightened circle. You should have a seat on labaz not less than one hour prior sunset.

The wounded bear is extremely spiteful. That is why it is very risky to conceal the bear in the impassable thicket where the animal prefers to go.

The killed bear must be skinned right away or all internal organs must be removed. Otherwise in a warm season the meat will become worse and will be unsuitable in food.
