Bear hunting on the den.

When a den (lair) is found it is possible to hunt for bear by small enclosure or to take him on the den.

It is convenient to hunt on the den three together: two persons with guns and the third persons with dogs. In case of necessity the third person cuts trees before the den preventing the shooting, helps to drive the bear out of the den and to take the bear out up to a road after a successful shot.

It should go out to the den before daybreak. You must be at the place at dawn. Sometimes the hunting proceeds not so as the hunters assume. Sometimes the animal lies in such place that you have to shoot at him only then when he will appear for a moment in the thicket. Otherwise the wounded animal leaves the place. Sometimes it happens so that it is very difficult to drive him out of roots of turned - inside trees. There was such kind of hunting that the bears did not leave their dens for a long time.

When the animal has gone wounded or is not shot it is always difficult to find him again or to cut off in a circle and next day to take him by that or another way.

Not reaching up the den fifty meters it is necessary to stop and to load the guns. Then one hunter with gun very cautiously comes to the den and takes his stand having the opportunity to shoot at jumped out animal.

According to a signal of this hunter, other hunters are coming up. Having released the dog, the shots occupy places in a distance of six - eight steps from the den, standing from one side. It means from the southern side from entrance of the den.

You should remember that the closer the hunter stands to the jumped out animal the easier he can get in him by a bullet on a place for slaughter. The hunter who controls himself very good and who is able to use gun also very good can kill the bear on the spot from such a distance by one bullet.

Only those hunters must shoot at a mighty bear from a short distance who go to hunt for the bear more than once and who can send the bullet exactly in the purpose.

So the dog is lowered. The experienced dog will show the entrance of the den at once and you can judge on his behaviour how the bear behaves: whether he is still lying or he is just on the point of appearing.

There is no necessity to lower the other dog at this time because in nervous conditions the dog can get under the bullet near the den.

The experienced hunters try to wound by the well-aimed shot the scrambled out bear or very quickly jumped out of the den bear to take the opportunity the dogs to work with the bear and then they kill the bear by the shot at the head.

You should keep caution during this hunting and do not come to the killed bear after shots. It can be happened that the bear pretends to be dead and he can take the hunters by surprise.

You must be on the alert setting dogs on the wounded animal. The dogs are not quick on the deep snow as the bear is. And if they are threatened with danger the animal should be rendered harmless or killed.

In general, there is no sense in torture of the wounded animal. The dogs should spend three - four minutes with him. After that the bear should be killed by the shot in a head.

It is useful to set the dogs on the bear because in the dens with the old she-bear can be found one-year-old bears (lonchak) and two-year-old bears (pestun). In the struggle with them the dogs feel themselves more confident and they have a great experience in working with big animal.
