The hunting like the animal`s voice (vaba).

When wolf puppies grow up, approximately in middle of August, they start their mournful songs after sunset. They can not wait for their parents with prey and start singing. When one of them starts singing with its breaking voice with barks, the other puppies will follow and betray their location.

Sometimes low thick voices of mature wolves join the chorus of the young and their mournful howling resounds far across the area.

Usually, mature wolves do not allow the young to sing near the den. Often it can be heard how puppies cry being punished by sharp teeth of their angry mother.

Some say that when wolves are howling nearby, it feels creepy all over. This is true. There is something special in these mournful sounds of wolf's songs. It is melancholic, wild and powerful and the impression is strong. The hunting like the animal`s voice (vaba)

Just make a wolfilike howl and you will hear how wolves will respond and their mournful howling will resound everywhere harmonizing with darkness of the night, wilderness and wildness of swamps.

Any hunter who has a good ear and and a voice for singing can hunt wolves by imitating their hawling. To make your voice more wolf-like, close your nose with middle fingers and holding your hands in a form of a megaphone bend to the ground and try to howl like a wolf .

At first, of course, the result may be not quite perfect. However, air humidity, and snuffling voice will help to hide the difference. If any wolves are present not too far, they will respond.

Each time, one should listen to wolves and and improve his howling to sound as a mature male or a female. This skill will be valuable for hunting wolves attracting them by hawling or using round-up technique before the snowfall.

In late August, when hunters arrive as a team for round-up hunting where a wolf brood is known to exist, it is important to contact local hunters and find out where wolf howling is usually heard at night. Then a "howler" [vabelshchik] with a few local hunters should head towards wolf's den before the sunset.

To detect the location of the den with maximal precision, the howler [vabelshchik] should leave his assistant somewhere on the slope in the area of the supposed den. The howler should go away at about 90° angle around imaginable den location, take his position and wait until after sunset.

If wolves will not howl after dark and betray where their den is, the howler should produce a howl of a mature female. If the howling is done well, the wolf family will respond with many voices.

The howler should determine the direction to the den and mark it by placing a cut twig on the ground pointing to the den and go to his assistant. He should ask the assistant where from he heard voices of the wolves. The den shoul be found approximately at the intersection of the two lines, one from the assistant and another one marked by the howler with the twig.

From middle of June wolf puppies and sometimes mature wolves already respond to howling. An interesting method of wolf hunting is based on this feature of wolf's behavior.

A hunter with a knowledge about approximate location of wolf den with a litter of pups arrives in its area and assumes a strategic position before the sunset. To assure maximum success, one should know exit paths of wolves that they use taking off to hunt. The hunter selects some open areas. They may be on the swamp or on the dry land. Then, he determines wind direction and chooses two places, the first one is where will howl and the second one is where wolves most likely will meet wolves when they will walk to the howl.

Once wolves hear your howling, may respond, but most often they just walk to the hunter.

Wolf's hearing is excellent and it is capable to determine almost precisely where the source of the sound is. Like all big animals, they trust the most their scent and will walk around the place to catch the smell first. Therefore, regardless where the wolves are, the hunter should run about fifty steps to another place and take a new strategic position so wolves could not smell him. The wolves will inevitably show up close to the hunter.

During such hunting, it is very convenient to have a shotgun and a rifle. If the distance to the wolves is close, it is convenient to use buck shot, but if the lighting is still good and wolves are about 100-120 steps away, use the rifle. If wolves walk too far away from you, make a noise of a hare caught in the trap. To make a voice of hare in distress by pressing nail of your thumb to your closed lips and inhale air with force. Wolves usually run fast towards a hair that got into trouble.

Hunting by howling, besides its benefit as a method for extermination of wolves, is interesting as a sport hunitng with gun during the time, when any other hunting is closed. With one good howler, this hunting can be done by a team of three to four hunters.

Sharpshooters should take their strategic positions near most likely pats of wolves, including the place about fifty steps upwind from the howler as described above.
