Bear hunting.

Bear

Who does not know this awkward, clumsy but dexterous and powerful representative of our fauna?

A brown bear is an omnivorous animal. He prefers to eat vegetable food. He likes to attend ripened oats. He eats with greed berries, wild fruits, nuts, acorns and mushrooms. He likes to regale himself with honey and fish. He does not scruple insects, worms, frogs and meat food. When opportunity offers he can kill the cow or elk. Sometimes the bears eat the bears.

The bears grow very quickly. They achieve a complete growth at ten - twelve years. The old age by the bears comes to thirty - forty years.

Having saved to autumn enough fat the bears lie into dens for the period of winter. Then when a thaw has set in, the bears go out of the den.

In old den the bears lie very seldom. Only the persecuted animal will use the abandoned den and will leave in it.

Some bears especially he - bears do not make in den any litter. In some dens you can see only rind stripped from fir- tree or silver fir.

Quite often you can find the den by stripped small fir-tree. The den is found here at a distance of ten - fifteen steps.

Some she-bears , expecting offspring, make bed in the den.

In practice there was a case when according to the character of the den and litter it was established that from the den the she - bear with offspring was turned out. It was possible to impose her again in a strong place - near the wood river. She was killed during the second part of February, given her opportunity to whelp. In the den two small blind bear - cubs were found.

The bears usually reach puberty at the age of 3,5. Heat by bears passes from the end of May till July. The pregnancy proceeds about seven months. Two or three bear - cubs are usually born, less often four. The bear - cubs are born blind. They begin to see at the age of one month.

They are born very small like puppies. The she-bears feed the kids with milk during two months sometimes more than two months.

In general the she-bear is a careless mother. She throws her cubs. She does not try to protect them. Quite another matter is, when she lies in the den with the one-year-old bears. She takes care of them very zealously. And it will be unluckily for the made - mistaken hunter if he will not kill the infuriated animal by the first bullet.

Having passed the winter with one-year-old bears ( lonchak ) the she-bear goes with them all summer. The next winter she-bears usually beds alone, very seldom you can find a bear-cub with her who is already two year old.

The next year the family of she-bear may consist of two, rarely three young bear-cubs.

He-bears live as hermits during all year and only at the beginning of the heat by she-bears they appear in those hunting places where they can meet family. The bear-weddings start.

Having come to the hunting place where there is a she-bear, he-bear, subject to a sexual instinct, makes no headway near the tree chosen by him. He moves away from the tree at a distance of eighty steps, stands a little bit and then comes back again till he treads a path. On the tree you can see scratches made by claws and teeth of the bear

Bloody battles between he-bears take place during this period. The bellow of animal is heard anywhere…

Does the bear attack the man? Yes, he does. Usually it happens in two cases. When the bear is wounded and angry and when she-bear has no opportunity to take away her kids from the man.

Clumsy huge animal weighing 200 - 300 kg can knock down the man by very fast throw. He begins to rumple and to tear the man by his strong claws. The bear quite often tears off skin from the head of the man. But as soon as the man begins to lose consciousness the bear usually leaves him and goes away. Sometimes the bear buries the man by brushwood.

The bear who has wounded or killed the man becomes very cautious and vigilant.

Sometimes during one month he lies in the den. He is all ears like a hare. And hardly having heard the ski - rustle he leaves a circle.

In those places where the man does not pursue the bear the animal is afraid of nobody but he avoids the close meetings with people…
